Murrieta Learning Center Class Descriptions for Spring 2009

December 12, 2008

Art-All Grades
In all art classes, students will be learning a variety of painting techniques and using them to produce land and seascape pictures. Students will learn how to use specific paint brushes to create beautiful “keepsake” paintings. Students will also learn how to create a portfolio of their paintings. Each class will be adjusted for grade appropriateness.

Musical Theater-Grades 1-5
Tonight’s the night we’ve all been waiting for! It’s the “Granny Awards!” Granny, who has retired from show business, will be honoring our favorite fairy tale characters. Who will win “Best Female Vocalist?” Or, the most coveted “Best Villain” award? Tune in to see and hear your favorite performers. And, don’t forget to keep an eye on that nasty Big Bad Wolf, as he tries to steal the treasured Granny Award during the show!

Music: Rhythm, Recorders & More-Grades K-2
This class will keep students moving to the music, and moving from instrument to instrument! Students will explore various musical instruments, such as the keyboard, the recorder, and percussion. Students will also be introduced to the bare basics of musical notation. Homework will consist of very basic, musical notation worksheets and the practice of a musical instrument at home. Parents need to provide a recorder for practice at home. Returning students will add to their repertoire, along with adding a couple more notes to their melodies. Join the fun as students make music and continue to learn about musical notation.

Spanish: Latin Playground-Grades 3-5
Join us as we travel to 8 different, Latin American countries! We’ll learn about the music, holidays, animals, and other fun facts about each country. Class time will focus on vocabulary, pronunciation, crafts, and games. Any homework given will focus on reinforcing the Spanish vocabulary introduced in class. Students will be given a “passport journal”, and an opportunity to experience the in-class listening lab. Please feel free to join us, regardless of your exposure to or your knowledge of the Spanish language. Nos vemos pronto!

Science 2 U-All Grades
Students will participate in motivating lab experiments and extension activities on four science themes over the 16 week period.
January/February- Gases- Discover the properties of gases (like the effects of pressure and temperature on gases) and apply that knowledge to construct and test your own hot air balloon.
February/March -Weather- Become a novice meteorologist in just 4 short weeks! Discover why weather patterns form, which clouds bring rain and how tornadoes form. You’ll even set up a mini weather station at your house and log data to bring to class.
March/April-Fruits and Flowers- This is a great time of the year to discover flowers and fruits! Why do plants have flowers? What exactly is a fruit? What is the difference between a fruit and a vegetable? How are flowers and fruits related? You’ll answer these questions and others by inspecting a variety of fruits and flowers.
May-Grunion -What is a grunion run? In this class we’ll answer that question as you learn about the biology and life-cycle of the California grunion. This local fish lays eggs that hatch on our beaches every year. You’ll look at real grunion and even hatch some of their eggs in class! We’ll explore how the moon’s cycles and the tides affect the behavior of this fish. Each student will be given a schedule of Grunion runs to enjoy with your family this year.
