Murrieta Learning Center Class Descriptions for Spring 2009
December 12, 2008
Art-All Grades
In all art classes, students will be learning a variety of painting techniques and using them to produce land and seascape pictures. Students will learn how to use specific paint brushes to create beautiful “keepsake” paintings. Students will also learn how to create a portfolio of their paintings. Each class will be adjusted for grade appropriateness.
Musical Theater-Grades 1-5
Tonight’s the night we’ve all been waiting for! It’s the “Granny Awards!” Granny, who has retired from show business, will be honoring our favorite fairy tale characters. Who will win “Best Female Vocalist?” Or, the most coveted “Best Villain” award? Tune in to see and hear your favorite performers. And, don’t forget to keep an eye on that nasty Big Bad Wolf, as he tries to steal the treasured Granny Award during the show!
Music: Rhythm, Recorders & More-Grades K-2
This class will keep students moving to the music, and moving from instrument to instrument! Students will explore various musical instruments, such as the keyboard, the recorder, and percussion. Students will also be introduced to the bare basics of musical notation. Homework will consist of very basic, musical notation worksheets and the practice of a musical instrument at home. Parents need to provide a recorder for practice at home. Returning students will add to their repertoire, along with adding a couple more notes to their melodies. Join the fun as students make music and continue to learn about musical notation.
Spanish: Latin Playground-Grades 3-5
Join us as we travel to 8 different, Latin American countries! We’ll learn about the music, holidays, animals, and other fun facts about each country. Class time will focus on vocabulary, pronunciation, crafts, and games. Any homework given will focus on reinforcing the Spanish vocabulary introduced in class. Students will be given a “passport journal”, and an opportunity to experience the in-class listening lab. Please feel free to join us, regardless of your exposure to or your knowledge of the Spanish language. Nos vemos pronto!
Science 2 U-All Grades
Students will participate in motivating lab experiments and extension activities on four science themes over the 16 week period.
January/February- Gases- Discover the properties of gases (like the effects of pressure and temperature on gases) and apply that knowledge to construct and test your own hot air balloon.
February/March -Weather- Become a novice meteorologist in just 4 short weeks! Discover why weather patterns form, which clouds bring rain and how tornadoes form. You’ll even set up a mini weather station at your house and log data to bring to class.
March/April-Fruits and Flowers- This is a great time of the year to discover flowers and fruits! Why do plants have flowers? What exactly is a fruit? What is the difference between a fruit and a vegetable? How are flowers and fruits related? You’ll answer these questions and others by inspecting a variety of fruits and flowers.
May-Grunion -What is a grunion run? In this class we’ll answer that question as you learn about the biology and life-cycle of the California grunion. This local fish lays eggs that hatch on our beaches every year. You’ll look at real grunion and even hatch some of their eggs in class! We’ll explore how the moon’s cycles and the tides affect the behavior of this fish. Each student will be given a schedule of Grunion runs to enjoy with your family this year.

North OC Learing Center Update: October 13, 2008
October 13, 2008
During the month of September, the Nutshell Science class studied Rock Origins. Students investigated the properties of rock and mineral samples such as color, weight, shape, texture, luster, and even smell! Students learned how to sort and classify their samples using a few properties. Students also conducted tests on the mineral samples to identify them. The class had the chance to perform some lab experiments as they did a streak test, acid test, iron test and tested each for hardness. Using this information they identified all 10 minerals. Students even collected rocks on their own and shared them with the class! They even had the opportunity to try some tests on their own rocks! It was a very fun and educational month for everyone!
In the Elements of Art and Art Masters of History classes, the month of September centered around the incredible life of Leonardo da Vinci. The students did a contour drawing of the Mona Lisa after hearing about da Vinci’s life and works. Next, they learned about two dimensional art and three dimensional art by taking the two dimensional image of the Mona Lisa and turning it into a three dimensional sculpture. They created a “thinking cap” for the Mona Lisa sculpture to help them understand just what this mysterious lady might have been thinking about. This activity explores the realm of Leonardo the inventor. They are having a lot of fun learning about famous artists and the elements of art they contributed to art history.
The class will soon move on to Rembrandt and his contributions to painting portraits. The focus will then turn back to Michelangelo to learn how painting on his back was accomplished. The class will keep tabs where these artists lived in time through a time line. They will see what century they lived in relationship to each other. A graphic organizer is the place used keep the information about the artist. This will go home with the students at the end of this semester’s study.
Classes are held from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Fall 2008 classes began on August 26, 2008 and will conclude on December 16, 2008. There will be no classes held on November 11, 2008 due to the Veterans Day Holiday. Spring 2008 registration will begin in December, so please check back for more information.

South Orange County Learning Center Update for September 2008
September 29, 2008
Hello Orange County JCS Families,
We have had a wonderful start in our More Nutshell Science class this semester.
We are currently taking “A Peek Inside You” learning about the Respiratory System, its parts and function. We have learned that air is mostly made of Nitrogen but also has a fair amount of Oxygen and only a tiny bit of Carbon Dioxide, which is a poison to our bodies. We measured how much air we exhale and saw that our lungs do in fact exhale CO2. Next, we will begin the Digestive System learning about the organs and their function as well as the nutrients in certain foods. Finally, we will conclude this unit with the Circulatory System, listening to our hearts and seeing how the heart and lungs are intricately intertwined. This will conclude our Life Science for the semester. Then we’ll move on to Physical Science with crystals.
The art class has just finished studying Vincent Van Gogh paintings. They learned about Van Gogh’s interest in everyday life. His genre still life paintings of shoes revealed his use of hatching. The class then did contour drawing of their own shoe. After I copied the shoes on the copier they took warm and cool colors and did hatching on the drawings using both colored pencils and markers. They then did a pattern of shoes alternating pencil and markers drawings. They may not have mastered every aspect of these lessons, but they have become familiar with these elements of art. There study ended with learning about primary and secondary colors, as well as color value using white and black. Each student chose an aspect of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” to paint.
Our next project is learning from Leonardo Da Vinci about his life, his inventions and paintings. I can’t wait to see how they bring the “Mona Lisa” from the two-dimensional canvas to a three-dimensional sculpture.
