JCS San Diego Academy Wins the Bright Idea Society Award!
February 25, 2013
The science students at San Diego Academy of Art & Science are collaborating on an interactive installation focused on oceanography. See the Project Description below. It will be shown at numerous exhibitions including the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering, where it has won the Bright Idea Society Award. Students will present their project to the City Council and on the main stage at Petco Park on Expo Day. They also received $600 dollars for supplies, two free booths, a school bus to transport them, and T-shirts. Great job team!
Project Description
The students are creating an interactive art installation that is focused on their perspective of beauty in the ocean juxtaposed with marine pollution. Its face is a 10 foot painting of waves with a hole cut into it, so that the audience can climb into the painting. Inside the painting will be a series of educational oceanography murals, a free standing reef and life sized local organisms sculpted from trash collected on our beach clean-ups. The audience will be prompted to create art that teaches them about local marine organisms and add to the installation. We will also be collaborating with a partner class in Baja Norte, Mexico.
