Fairness:

To treat others equally and not take advantage of them. To share with others and take turns willingly. To be open-minded to the thoughts and opinions of others. Fairness is what justice looks like.

“Live so that when your children think of fairness and integrity, they think of you.”  H. Jackson Brown Jr.

A fair person is one who:

  • Takes turns with others
  • Listens with an open mind
  • Follows the rules
  • Takes responsibility for their own actions
  • Is truthful
  • Treats everyone equally

Activities:

Brainstorm a list of ideas of what fairness looks like. Encourage your student to take the fairness challenge and have them create a fairness goal for the month.

Take your kids to visit a local courtroom and see how fairness plays a part in our judicial system.

Have your students look for traits of fairness in the characters of the current book they are reading. Compare and contrast their different qualities.

Have students evaluate the fairness factor in their friendships. How does fairness affect their relationships?

Service Learning Activities:

Review the food pyramid chart and research the eating habits of people from different countries. Share the information gained with school officials and help to develop healthy eating habits across the school so that students of all cultures and backgrounds have the knowledge of how healthy foods will benefit their bodies.

Host a recycling can drive and use the funds to help members of your community.

Visit a local food pantry and make a list of needed food items. Run a food drive to help create healthy balanced meals for the homeless in your community. Donate the food items to the food pantry.

Learn about tax forms and help to prepare tax returns for elders in your community to make sure it is fair and correct.

Participate in a Martin Luther King Day service learning activity.
