JCS Online System Requirements and Recommendations

  • Access to a computer with internet access and a web browser
If your student has no access at home, then he/she should use their local library to access JCS Online.
  • While JCS Online functions well in most web browsers, the following are formally supported and tested by the software manufacturer:

With PCs running Windows (98, XP, or Vista):

With Macs running OS X

Each of the web browsers mentioned above is available as a free download from the software developers:

Additional Software Recommendations:

  • AOL Subscribers: AOL users have been known to experience problems when using the AOL web browser. To avoid this, please download either Firefox or Internet Explorer 7.
  • Microsoft Office 2003 or later (PC or Mac)
Students will find it easier to use Word, Excel and Powerpoint when producing assignments for uploading into course documents. However, the cost of these programs can be expensive. Fortunately, there are alternatives to purchasing and installing Microsoft Office on your computer.

A highly recommended option is Google Docs which is web-based, free and offers word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software that is very similar to Microsoft Office. The best part about Google Docs is that your documents are always online and accessible from anywhere. You can also download and save the documents to your local computer for uploading into JCS Online. For students using a library to work on school projects, this may prove to be the best application.

Another option is the Open Office software package which is available as a free download and allows user to create, open, and save documents in Microsoft formats such as .doc, .xls, .ppt, etc.

  • Adobe Reader
This software allows users to read documents in the .pdf format which is one of the most widespread file formats found on the web.
