California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE)
The CHSPE is a voluntary test that assesses proficiency in basic writing, reading, and mathematical skills taught in public schools. Eligible persons who pass the CHSPE are awarded a Certificate of Proficiency by the California State Board of Education. California state law requires that the Certificate of Proficiency is equivalent to a high school diploma. However, it is not equivalent to completing all coursework required for regular graduation from high school.

FAQs and Informational BulletinGeneral Education Development Test (GED):
The GED is a voluntary test that assesses proficiency in five different areas: language arts, writing; social studies; science; language arts, reading; and mathematics. The GED is aimed at the adult population, with an age requirement of 18 years old (or within 60 days of 18th birthday). Many institutions consider the passage of the GED equivalent to receiving a high school diploma.
