Reminder! Grade 5-8 Homeschool Spelling Bee on January 16 at the Murrieta Meeting Center

The Spelling Bee is open to all 5-8 grade students who reside in Riverside and San Diego counties. The event will be held on Friday, January 16, 2009 at 11:00 at the Murrieta Meeting Center.

We are still accepting students so please email Stephanie Trogden strogden@juliancharterschool.org if you would like to participate!

For practice, log on to www.myspellit.com for spelling lists to study from.

Update: Friday’s Final Exams in San Diego!

Please be advised that the finals offered at the San Diego site on Friday, January 9 (this Friday) will start at 11a.m. - NOT 10 a.m. as previously scheduled. There is a memorial service that day at the church and the students will not be allowed to start early if they show early. Thank you so much and we apologize for any inconvenience.

“Fairness” Is the Character Trait of the Month for January

I just wanted to share with you that fairness is the character trait of the month of January. Fairness means you need to treat others equally. During the month of January we will also have the opportunity to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. It was his hope and dream that we would live in a world where all people would be seen as equals. As you study fairness this month please also encourage your students to learn about Martin Luther, his personal character traits and what they can do to make the world a better place.

Activities and service learning ideas can be found on the web page under Service Learning at www.juliancharterschool.org/resources/service-learning/fairness/ . I would love to hear what your students are doing to develop their character and help the community. Please see below for a couple of great ideas from the web page!

Fairness activity and service learning project:

Take your kids to visit a local courtroom and see how fairness plays a part in our judicial system.

Review the food pyramid chart and research the eating habits of people from different countries. Share the information gained with school officials and help to develop healthy eating habits across the school so that students of all cultures and backgrounds have the knowledge of how healthy foods will benefit their bodies.

A description of the project
File attachment (preferrably in JPG or PNG file format)
Contact information for any questions

Will You Take the 2009 Governor’s Challenge?

We would like to invite all of our students, parents, and staff to join the 2009 Governor’s physical fitness challenge for the good of their health. The Challenge lasts for 28 days from the date you sign up and begin the challenge. Every student and adult signing up for the Governor’s Challenge will qualify for a free 24 Hour Fitness Club 30-day pass. Also, schools participating in the Governor’s Challenge can earn various prizes.You may sign up for the challenge and record your active days at http://www.calgovcouncil.org/

Please share this information with other students and their families as a way to encourage a healthy lifestyle and improve their success on the State Physical Fitness Testing.

6 Tips for Obtaining Scholarships

Here are some helpful hints when looking for scholarships.

1. Students should visit the web site of the local high school near where they live. Usually posted in the counselor section are local scholarships available to all local students.

2. Contact the local Chamber of Commerce for a listing of local service organizations, clubs and professional organizations.

3. Contact the organizations and ask if they offer scholarships opportunities. If so request an application.

4. Find out if your parent’s employer or your employer has scholarships.

5. Check out the financial aid section of the college you are applying to for scholarships offered. Apply even if you have not received confirmation of acceptance–especially state schools. The deadlines for many scholarships eclipse before acceptance letters are mailed to students.

6. Apply for both big and small scholarships- it all adds up! Many students don’t want to “waste time” on the small ones because it seems like to much work for the small amount offered, but every dollar helps. A $250 scholarship will cover 2 books, maybe 3.

Lastly, searching for scholarships can be a very tiring and never ending process–stay focused, keep good records, and stay on task. The hard work may pay off.

High School Varsity basketball games are scheduled to begin Friday, January 16 at the Rancho Bernardo Recreation Center Gymnasium. Participating sites include Alpine, Murrieta, North County, and San Diego. If you are a high school student and would like to partciipate, please contact the closest academy coordinator.
