Let’s go to Mars!

Your visit to the Challenger Learning Center is not just a field trip — it’s a unique hands-on learning experience, transforming you into a scientist, engineer, or researcher on a simulated space mission, complete with mission control and spacecraft. From the moment of lift-off to the completion of the mission, you become a critical member of one of eight mission teams. Participants will have the opportunity to become both mission controller and spacecraft astronaut.

Inside the center, groups of 16 to 36 students in grades 7 and up become crew members on a simulated space mission to Mars.

Crew members must solve real-life problems in math, science and technology to successfully complete their mission. Each team is critical, and the success of the mission is dependent upon the work of all teams. The two-hour simulation takes place in a realistic mock-up of a spacecraft and mission control room.

This field trip will take place on Friday, March 16 from 12:00-2:00. Sign up by going to www.juliancharterschool.org and clicking on the Field Trips tab. Earth Science students will receive credit for two second-semester labs for their attendance.

The new Julian Charter School robotics team recently received the Innovative Solution Award at a regional First Lego League robotics qualifying tournament in Palm Desert, California. The award was presented to the students for their ideas to train restaurant staff in proper gluten-free food preparation and to help people with celiac disease test food for cross-contamination. In addition to receiving the award, the robotics team, called the Electrolights, also qualified to be one of five teams to advance to the championship competition at Legoland on December 3.

The Time Warner Cable Southern California Region Qualifying Tournament was held at the UCR Graduate Center in Palm Desert on November 5. There were 21 teams competing in the First Lego League robotics competition organized by Smart Education. Teams were judged in four categories: the robot game, robot design, research project presentation and core values.

Competing as part of Team Electrolights were: Judaea Bufford, 11, Celine Cavanaugh, 12, Spencer Mack, 11, Emily Sizemore, 11, and Michael Sizemore, 9. One additional team member, Jack Pine-Rusk, 10, was unable to compete Saturday.

The Electrolights are a rookie team and are excited to advance to the championship rounds. The team was organized during fall semester and has been meeting weekly to practice their programming skills. The team picked the name to be the Electrolights because electrolytes give people energy and balance. The team is an energetic team that works together like electrolytes work together to give your body energy and balance. The team motto is “We are programming rocket scientists who have fun and conquer robots on our way to Alpha Centauri.” The team picked this motto because it incorporated all of the team members’ ideas for the team name.

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) introduces young people, ages 9 to 14, to the fun and excitement of science and technology while building self-confidence, knowledge, and valuable employment and life skills. FLL challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. Alongside adult mentors, FLL teams solve problems using engineering concepts, presentation techniques, and robots.

Each year, teams are given new challenges around a theme. This year, during the 2011 FOOD FACTOR Challenge, students explored the topic of food safety and examined the possible points of contamination food encounters–from exposure to insects and creatures, to unsterile processing and transportation, to unsanitary preparation and storage. Students then proposed ways to prevent or combat contaminates.

It’s hard to believe, but we’re rapidly approaching the end of the fall 2011 semester. With the end of the semester comes final exams for high school home study and iLearn Online students as well as middle school students taking Algebra I or greater.

This year, the exams will be held January 9-12, 2012 at 4 different locations–the Murrieta Center, the San Diego Learning Center, the Julian Charter main office in Julian, and a desert location (TBD).

The listed end times are when the students should be finishing up their exams for the day. There are no set days for subjects – students are able to come at any time (as long as they are finished by the end time listed) during any day that the exams are offered at a certain location for any exam.

Some important reminders for students taking exams – PLEASE READ!

No cell phones allowed at all during testing. Please have cell phone ringers silenced (or phones turned off) and put in the student’s pocket, purse, backpack. If a proctor sees a cell phone for any reason it will be taken away and the student can get it back when they leave for the day.

No ear phones, ear buds, music device of any kind.

No talking during exams. We assume that students are not talking about the exams, but talking is disturbing to those around the talkers, so please don’t do it. If a student is talking there will be no warnings – a proctor will move the students so they are no longer together.

Exams need to be taken in 1 sitting. If a student is taking an exam they need to finish it before leaving for the day or taking a break.

Students are able to take exams all in 1 day, spread out over the entire week, or a few days – whatever is best for the student.

Students are to sit 1 person to a table until the tables are filled and then they can start doubling up.

If there are any questions please call/email your EF or MSS. Thank you and good luck!

We are pleased to announce one of our most diverse schedules to date. We’re now offering courses in social studies, Spanish, and lots of writing and math! The classes are small with a maximum of 20 students and designed to support what you are doing in home study. The best part is that you can attend from the comfort of your own home! The cost for taking these courses is also extremely low at only 25-50 EUs per course.

Registration will open on Monday, December 5, 2011 at 9:00 AM and will close on January 27, 2012. If a course fills up and we have enough students on the wait list, then we will try to offer additional sections.

Core courses meet twice per week for 1 hour and start the week of January 17-20, 2012

Supplemental/enrichment courses meet once per week for 1.25 hours and start the week of January 30-February 3, 2012
