Purpose and Content

The primary purpose of the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) is to ensure that pupils who graduate from California public high schools can demonstrate grade level competency in reading, writing, and mathematics. The CAHSEE helps identify students who are not developing skills that are essential for life after high school and allows them to receive the attention and resources needed to help them achieve these skills during their high school years. Passing the CAHSEE or its equivalent is a requirement needed to receive a public high school diploma.

The CAHSEE has two parts: English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics.

The ELA section addresses state content standards through grade ten. In reading, this includes vocabulary, decoding, comprehension, and analysis of information and literary texts. In writing, this covers writing strategies, applications, and the conventions of English (e.g. grammar, spelling, and punctuation).

The mathematics section of the CAHSEE addresses state standards in grades six, seven and Algebra I. The exam includes statistics, data analysis and probability, number sense, measurement and geometry, mathematical reasoning, and algebra. Students are also asked to demonstrate a strong foundation in computation and arithmetic, including working with decimals, fractions, and percents.

A passing score for both the ELA and math sections of the CAHSEE is 350. If you would like to receive additional help in either subject area, please contact your Educational Facilitator for information about our CAHSEE intervention options.

Post-Grade 12 Students

Students who are not able to meet the CAHSEE requirement before they complete the units needed to graduate from high school are encouraged to continue taking the CAHSEE with Julian Charter School until they have passed both sections. Additional support is offered through our CAHSEE intervention program and is available to Post-Grade 12 students who would like the additional help.
