Spring 2010 Soccer Final

May 27, 2010

Middle School

On Friday afternoon, the San Diego Surf concluded a perfect 6 - 0 season as they edged the San Diego Jaguars 6 - 5.   Congratulations to all the middle school teams for their improving play and superb sportsmanship.  Thanks to the coaches for their dedication to the students of JCS.

High School

On Friday, the first seed Alpine Coyotes and second seed Murrieta Hawks played a game for the ages.  In the first half it was all Coyotes as they took a 5 – 2 lead.  The second half belonged to the Hawks as they came from behind to take the lead.  Alpine fought back to tie and put the game into a 5-minute sudden death overtime period.  Both teams played stellar defense as the overtime period expired without a winner.  The game would then be won on the best of 3 penalty kicks.  The Hawks made their first 2 shots ending one of the most memorable games in the history of JCS sports.  Congratulations to both Hawks and Coyotes for a game well played.  Thanks to Coach Hovenic and Coach Siders for their hard work and dedication.

The third place game between the San Diego Jaguars and the San Diego Surf was all Jaguars, as they shut out the Surf 5 - 0.    The game was played hard, and each team showed great respect for the other.  Thanks to Coach Schaeffer and Coach Satterfield for their leadership.

That will do it for another year of JCS sports.  Thanks again to all who have made a difference in the lives of our student-athletes.  We hope to see you again next year.

Journey North Calculations Successful!

May 19, 2010

Careful geographic calculations were done by a group of homeschoolers in Brea who successfully identified ten mystery cities by using clues such as sunrise and sunset times over the semester. In the last month additional clues were given to help them narrow down their search. Students worked in family groups or with partners and all 17 K-6 students gained a deeper understanding of their world and others in it. Congratulations to Mrs. Kling’s science group for all their hard work! Check out the mystery cities here: http://www.learner.org/jnorth/mclass/spring2010/Update051410.html

Students Learn About Literature Through Role Play

May 18, 2010

Mrs. Sheehey’s freshman English classes at the Murrieta High School Academy participated in a Tribal Survivor to end of a literature unit on the novel The Lord of the Flies. The students were grouped into tribes for which they picked their own tribe name, designed a tribal flag, and participated in several activities like mental tug-o-war where they answered questions about the novel. They also went on a literary device treasure hunt and built their own mini shelters. The tribes created their own distinct tribal outfits and put on face paint to scare away the competition.
