Mrs. McCabe’s Elluminate Writing Class Featured Writers’ Work!
October 29, 2009
In Mrs. McCabe’s Elluminate writing class students have mastered the art of structuring an essay and displayed their knowledge through an activity involving higher levels of critical thinking. In this activity Michael, Luke, and Stone have created a metaphor linking the structure of an essay to cells, sailboats and growing a tree. The class finished off their writing projects by incorporating technology into their presentation. We invite you to open the links and take a peek into this week’s featured writers’ work! Enjoy.

JCS Flag Football - Final Week Recap
October 26, 2009
On a perfect fall afternoon for football, the two middle school teams from San Diego battled once again at Chollas Lake Park. After all was said and done, the San Diego Bolts defeated the San Diego Packers by the score of 25 to 19. The victory sealed the series for the Bolts as they ended the season with 4 wins and 2 losses. In this game the Packers showed great poise and heart after battling back from a 19 point deficit.
The high school “JCS Bowl” on Friday saw the heavily favored Murrieta Hawks defeat the San Diego Jaguars by the score of 18 to 6. The Hawks started off the scoring on a 15 yard quarterback sweep. Soon thereafter the Hawks intercepted a Jaguars pass and ran it in for another score. Behind 12 to 0, the Jaguars didn’t give up as they drove down the field and scored on a 25 yard fourth down pass play to end the first half, making the score 12 to 6 in favor of the Hawks. The only scoring in the second half came on another pass interception by the Hawks that was run 50 yards for a touchdown.
Congratulations to all the players, teams, and sites for participating in the 2009 JCS flag football program. A special thanks goes out to all those who demonstrated the fair play and sportsmanship which is at the heart and soul of the JCS sports program.
2009-2010 Budget Reductions
October 22, 2009
Dear Parents,
As you are probably aware, the effect of California’s budget crises has impacted schools greatly, and Julian Charter School is no exception. Over the last month, the JCS Board and Cabinet have worked diligently to bridge a $1.5 million funding deficit and budget shortfall, while ensuring that the integrity of JCS programs is maintained in the manner in which you have come to expect for your child. Despite the cuts JCS remains strong and viable, however it is with sincere regret and heavy hearts that we announce the effects of our budget reductions.
School Restructuring: As part of the budget reduction process, we have worked on re-organizing the structure of the school to be more efficient and streamlined and less administration heavy. We’ve looked at each ‘tier’ of the school, began cuts at the top and moved our way down. This included reducing benefits, classified support positions, the annual step increase for staff, tightening up the student/teacher ratio, right-sizing positions, and removing an administrative layer of support from site based programs (Academy Advisors and Learning Center Coordinators). Remaining staff will pull together to take on the duties of the positions that were eliminated, and in some instances a more cost-effective lower level position was instituted. We have reduced support staff at sites when students are not present; restructured some of the classified positions to “part-time seasonal” and downsized whenever possible.
In addition, in order to allow JCS to continue serving the majority of our current 2130 students, we are planning to close our North County Academy on October 30th. Due to continued low enrollment it is no longer financially feasible. The majority of students will shift locations to being served at our Murrieta High School and Middle School Academy or move to the home study program.
I am so proud of our staff for their understanding of the current economy, and their willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure that Julian Charter School remains strong and healthy, weathers this crisis, and continues to serve students in the manner that our students and families are accustomed.
I would like to once again assure you that JCS is strong and stable, as long as we make the difficult decisions necessary to weather this economic storm.
Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or suggestions. We greatly appreciate all of the support that parents have shown through volunteering, donations of supplies and monetary donations, and by trusting us with the education of your children.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Cauzza

JCS Flag Football- Week 5 Recap
October 19, 2009
On a warm and sunny afternoon at Chollas Lake Park the two middle school teams from San Diego had at it once again This time, the Bolts nipped the Packers by the score of 27 to 26. The Packers demonstrated a fantastic passing game that was outdone by the tremendous running game of the Bolts. The teams will square off for the final time next week with the Bolts leading the series 3 games to 2.
On Friday at Rancho Bernardo Recreation Center the high school division’s Murrieta Hawks finished off an undefeated regular season by beating the Pine Valley Pumas. The Pumas, showing a very good running offense and a stingy defense, ran out of gas in the late second half as the Hawks’ speed was just too much for the Pumas to handle.
Friday’s final had the two San Diego teams battling it out for the second seed and one last shot at the undefeated Murrieta Hawks. In this hard fought affair, the Jaguars upset the once beaten Saints by the score of 12 to 6 to earn a spot in next Friday’s JCS Bowl. The Jaguars defense was stellar as they sacked the Saints quarterback on numerous occasions, thereby derailing a passing attack that had been one of the best in the league.
The final week of flag football looks like this:
Thursday, October 22
San Diego Packers (2-3) vs. the San Diego Bolts (3-2) @ 12:30PM
Friday, October 23 (JCS Bowl)
