The volunteers will assist the Library staff with such tasks as setting up activities, monitoring reading logs, and handing out incentives. Details regarding hours, skills, and other requirements will be shared at the training sessions.
This event is open to the public. The Murrieta Public Library is located at Eight Town Square (Adams Avenue and Kalmia Street). For more information about the program call (951) 304-BOOK (2665) or visit the Library’s web site at www.murrieta.org/services/library.

Pine Valley Academy Student Wins Local Writing Contest!
May 13, 2009
James Goodrich, a Pine Valley Academy 9th grade student recently entered a piece of writing titled “The Sombrero Wearing Iguanas” from his Science & English class into the local newspaper, the Back Country Messenger. As it turns out, James won first place in the contest and second place was awarded to an adult. For winning the contest, James was awarded some prize money and had his writing published in the paper. James has teased his teacher Mrs. Hoody because she only gave him a 93% on the assignment.
The first half of his story was published last month and the second half of the story was printed in this month’s publication along with a brief article about James and his school. You can read the first half online at http://www.backcountrymessenger.com/Edition%20Files/2009/Apr09/BCM.APR.09final.pdf (see page 13). The second half of his story picks up in the May issue on page 14 and concludes on page 23. Congratulations James from all of us at Julian Charter School.
Orange County Students Win Big in 43rd Annual California Student Media Festival
May 12, 2009
Julian Charter School is proud to announce that four home study students in Orange County are winners in their category of the 43rd Annual California Student Media Festival. Winners were Caley McLaughlin, 4th grade (History/Social Studies, Elementary), Zacary Jervis, 5th grade (Independent Student Project, Elementary), Grace Kling, 1st grade (Science/Health, Elementary), and Stone Peterson, 7th grade (History/Social Studies, Secondary). Congratulations are also in order for Nancy Porter, the Orange County Educational Facilitator who helped guide the projects with the students.
KOCE, in partnership with Computer Using Educators (CUE) and Wells Fargo is the sponsor of our nation’s oldest student media festival. Over the past fifteen years, the California Media Festival has awarded more than $100,000 to California schools. It has expanded to include the work of more than 6,000 student contestants from schools across the state. The festival exists to celebrate the amazing media and multimedia projects produced by California’s best and brightest students and teachers — rewarding and acknowledging their successful classroom work at two separate awards events Saturday, May 30th, 2009. The Festival showcases what can be accomplished when talented students and dedicated teachers work together integrating media and multimedia into education. Congratulations not only to these winners but to other Orange County students that submitted amazing projects! ). http://www.mediafestival.org/43video.shtml
