Topic: Move Beyond the “Meat”

A well rounded education is like a well balanced meal. Although most of us remember to include the meat (textbook), we often forget the rest of the educational diet. As
a result our kids often times find their educational plate dull and tasteless. At times a meal without the desert can leave the student starved. Come join Nancy McCabe
as she moves beyond the “meat” (text) and shares some of her secret recipes guaranteed to spice up any home education menu.

Recipes include:

  • Photojournal essays
  • Webquests
  • Photostory
  • Student created tests with Bloom’s Taxonomy
  • Projects to enhance the text
  • Games to knead information from short term memory to long term memory

Nancy McCabe earned her M.Ed from the University of San Diego. Her professional resume includes ten years in the classroom, ten years as a facilitator, as well as homeschooling two of her
own children. Having taught all grades including the college level, she also serves as the Language Arts Specialist for JCS as well as teaching writing online using Elluminate.

What is Plagiarism? Middle School Technology Class Students Discuss and Produce Narrated Presentations

March 17, 2009

Earlier this week, students in Mr. Bell’s Middle School Technology class learned about plagiarism and had a great discussion on the types of plagiarism and some of the consequences of submitting work and ideas that is not their own. The students created Powerpoint presentations using royalty-free images, clip art, and images licensed under Creative Commons. Finally, the students used Voicethread to upload their presentations to the web and provide narration.

Please take a moment to view some samples of their work. They did a fantastic job as you can see! Stay tuned for more information on Voicethread and the many ways it can be used as we will be providing accounts to students in the home study program next year thanks to funding from generous donors.

For additional information on plagiarism and how to prevent it, please visit the resources at http://www.plagiarism.org/.

As a result of the learning process and participating, the students met the following NETS (National Educational Technology Standards):
1. creative thinking and construct knowledge through the use of technology. (NETS 1)
2. create original works as a means of personal expression. (NETS 1b)
3. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats. (NETS 2b)

Students had to pretend the book we just read, “The CAY” was coming to theaters soon and they needed to advertise the movie including, actors for main characters, and a brief synopsis of story. Students Become the Teachers and Show Us How To Solve Math Problems

March 9, 2009

For this project, students in Mrs. Beile’s middle school learning center math class were tasked with creating a Powerpoint presentation that explained how to solve a math problem. The students were expected to select a math concept they were struggling with themselves and pretend they were explaining the concept to a friend. By going through the process, the students were able to reinforce the concept for themselves and develop mastery. Everyone did a fantastic job! Below are a couple of sample presentations.

Sign Up Now for 6th Grade Camp Surf

March 4, 2009

Julian Charter School’s annual sixth grade camp will be held at YMCA’s Camp Surf, which is located about 10 miles from downtown San Diego. This fun and educational experience is available to all current Julian Charter School sixth graders, for free.

Camp Surf is a great experience you don’t want to miss. Students will participate in outdoor classes taught by very competent camp counselors focusing on our earth science curriculum which includes ocean movement, ocean habitats, ocean safety and survival. They will also have a chance to try archery, climbing the vertical wall, and going boogie boarding or swimming at the beach (students who do not want to go into the water can make sand castles instead.) These events are extremely well chaperoned and the safety of the students comes first. If you are interested in attending, please visit the Camp Surf page for all details and forms. http://www.juliancharterschool.org/k-8/6th-grade-camp-surf/
