2009 Orange County Spelling Bee Results

February 25, 2009

The Orange County Spelling Bee was held at the Heritage Library in Irvine on Thursday, January 22. We had a great turn out with 26 students altogether. Everyone did a fabulous job, especially the first graders who were such star spellers, the spelling master had to move into the third grade spelling list! Each student showed courage and success as they stood in front of fellow students and parents and gave their best effort in spelling. All students received a certificate of participation and a pencil. The winners of each grade level were awarded a gift certificate to Golden Spoon.

Congratulations to the kindergarteners Joseph Khazenedar and Sarah Cullum who both received a spelling game and to Reed Taylor (6th grade) and Jesse Riem (8th grade) for competing against themselves. Grade level winners included: First Grade: Rayna Martin; Second Grade: Jessie Groot; Third Grade: Madeline Sharp; Fourth Grade: Caley McLauglin; and Fifth Grade: Ammitai Groot.

March Science Club: Flying Paper Airplanes

February 19, 2009

The goal of this science club is to fly your plane the farthest.

When and Where:

Murrieta Meeting Center: March 6, 10:00-11:30 a.m.
San Diego Learning Center, March 3, 1:30-2:30 p.m. (Following Astronomy Lab)
Orange County: TBA, please contact kfleischli@juliancharterschool.org
Desert Area: TBA, please contact jizydorek@juliancharterschool.org

Questions:

  • Why do some planes fly far, and some fall flat?
  • How can you make a plane that will go really far?

Our next science club will help you figure it out! At home, research a couple of ideas and try them out. If you can, find a friend to race against. Here are some ways to get started

Check out these websites:

  • This one has lots of detailed directions: engineeringworks.tamu.edu
  • http://www.paperairplanes.co.uk/
(Note: This site accepts commercials on the left side. Like all commercials, they are trying to sell you something. Please don’t click on them even if they look interesting!)
  • This one is a bit more technical, for those who want to really get into it
    http://www.paperplane.org/
  • Bernoulli’s Principle: A simple, interactive demo
(It’s this principle that allows flying objects to defeat gravity!)
    http://library.thinkquest.org/27948/bernoulli.html

Please be sure to have your parent’s supervision whenever you go online. Safety first!

Some things to consider:

  • Use 20 lb, 8″ x 11″ copy paper and weights made from standard office supplies.
  • Practice at home, but be ready to make your airplane from scratch at the club.
