Writing Enrichment Club in Ramona on February 9

Looking for extra support in writing? The writing enrichment club will enhance writing skills through creative instruction in three different writing genres throughout the year. February’s focus will be Summary Writing using Excellence in Writing.

Spring Art Classes with Monart in Corona

Everyone can learn to draw at Monart, Corona! In addition, they will learn spatial relationships, listening skills, focus and concentration; powerful tools that will enhance their academic studies. This is not a study of artists; it is DRAWING. We have fun, and learn realistic drawing with different medium. We learn about what we are drawing, where in the world it lives and what it does. Each student will be given a fact sheet and a work sheet where they will practice learning to draw.

We are fully approved by Julian to take students starting at any time. Call for an appointment or trial class. 951 278-3330. Instructor will drive to Corona or Riverside for a class of 10 or more. Instructor was previously the art teacher at Crossroads Christian School.

JCS Basketball - Week 2 Results

January 26, 2009

The second week of the JCS basketball season continued on Thursday afternoon as the middle school program played two games at the Colina Park gymnasium in San Diego. In the first game the Jaguars (2-0) beat the Bruins (1-1) by the score of 52-27. Micah led the way for the Jaguars with a phenomenal 30 points, 15 coming from 3 point land. Rounding out the scoring for the Jaguars included Andre with 16 points, Caleb with 4 points, and Brennan with 2 points. The Bruins were led by John Michael with 13 points and Alyssabeth with 8 points.  Shari, Thomas, and Anna chipped in 2 points each for the Bruins.

In the second game the Huskies defeated the Eagles 25-5. David and Johnny led the Huskies with 13 points and 8 points respectively. Jake and Cody made one basket each for the victors. The Eagles were led by Corey with 3 points and Mackenzie with 2 points.

Next Thursday the Bruins (1-1) play the Huskies (1-1) at 1:00 p.m. while the Eagles (0-2) take on the Jaguars (2-0) at 2:00 p.m.

On Friday afternoon at the Rancho Bernardo Recreation Center gymnasium the high school took to the court.  The Murrieta Hawks (2-0) continued their winning ways by defeating the San Diego Jaguars 46-27. The Hawks were led by Douglas and Josiah with 17 and 14 points respectively. Dominic (9 points), Courtney (4 points), and Peter (2 points) rounded out the scoring for the first place Hawks. The Jaguars were led by the long range shooting of John Michael who tallied 12 points. Chris (7 points), Hashem (5 points), Erik (2 points), and Dan (1 point) rounded out the scoring for the second place Jaguars.

The late game was a nail biter as the San Diego Riptide (1-1) held off the Alpine Coyotes (0-1) by the score of 25-24. The Riptide had six players score including Tristan (9 points), Victor, David S., and Muhammad (4 points apiece), and David M. and Joey (2 points each). The Coyotes were led by Miguel and Chelsy with 14 points and 10 points respectively.

Next Friday the Alpine Coyotes (0-1) will face the Murrieta Hawks (2-0) at 12:50 p.m. while the San Diego Jaguars (1-1) will take on the North County Titans (0-1) at 1:50 p.m.

FREE Homeschool Gymnastics E-Club at Twist’N'U on Friday, January 23 from 5:30-7 p.m.

Come participate in a unique gymnastics class for 1 hour. We will have experienced coaches guiding you through a typical session. Twist’n’u has trampolines, air track, rock climbing wall, bars, balance beams, and so much more. Register Now! Spring 2009 Online Courses for Homeschool Students Grades 6-8

Please join us as we pilot our new online classes for the Spring Session. Students will participate in an online virtual classroom through direct instruction, abundant peer discussion, a variety of multimedia experiences while advancing their technology skills. Microphone headsets will be mailed to the student once enrollment is finalized and confirmed through email.

Course Descriptions

  • Spring Into Writing II
    Grades 6-8
    Wednesdays: 10:30-11:30 a.m.
    Instructor: Nancy McCabe
    In this class, students who have a clear understanding of paragraph structure and the writing process will move into the art and structure of an essay as well as descriptive writing. Technology standards integrated into student writing and several software programs will help students have fun publishing their writing online.
  • Literature
    Grade 6
    Tuesdays: 9:00-10:00 a.m.
    Instructor: Lori Orrell

    In this class, students will read a Core Literature Book called: The Cay by Theodore Taylor. Students will explore character traits, discuss story elements, visit interactive websites, write responses to Literature, and complete book reports. Teacher and class will choose the next title together.

  • Literature
    Grade 7-8
    Tuesdays: 12:45 -1:45 p.m.
    Instructor: Nan O’Donnell

    Delve into the faraway world of 16th century Feudal Japan as we read The Samurai’s Tale, by Erik Christian Haugaard. Written from the perspective of the orphaned Murakami boy, this novel brings old Japan to life with poetic descriptions of actual historical figures and events. Mrs. O’Donnell, who lived and taught in Japan for 9 years, will teach this class. Let’s make this unit more than just “a good read”! Attention to universal theme, plot and character development will be addressed. Seventh and Eighth graders are both welcome to study this core literature book.

  • Algebra I, 2nd Semester
    Grade 7-8
    Monday & Thursday 9:00-10:00 a.m.
    Instructor: Betsy Frogge

    Students will receive instruction using the 2009 Prentice Hall Algebra textbook. Concepts covered this semester include systems of equations and inequalities, exponents, polynomials, and quadratic equations. This is an on-going class from semester 1 and begins with Chapter 6 of the text.

  • Pre-Algebra, 2nd Semester
    Grade 6-8
    Monday & Thursday 10:30-11:30 a.m.
    Instructor: Betsy Frogge

    Students will receive instruction using the 2009 Prentice Hall Pre-Algebra textbook. Concepts covered this semester include; ratios, proportions, and percents; solving equations and inequalities; linear functions and graphing; and area and volume. This is an on-going class from semester 1 and begins with Chapter 6 of the text.

  • Humanities
    Grade 8
    Tuesdays: 10:30-11:45 a.m.
    Instructor: Melissa WebbThis eighth grade humanities class combines historical literature and research on the American Revolution. Students will journey into an eight-week session with abundant class participation, exciting technological experiences, and California Standards academics. We will be reading the CORE literature novel, My Brother Sam is Dead, researching our American independence, writing essays, discussing, and debating.
  • Institute for Excellence in Writing Level A-Level 1
    Grade 6-8
    Mondays : 12:45-1:45 p.m
    Instructor: Melissa WebbIEW- Institute for Excellence in Writing Level A - Level 1 class. Learn the methods that will give your student excellent style and structure in writing. Seventh graders are encouraged to attend to prepare for STAR writing in March.

Class Requirements

  • Students need good keyboarding skills and access to a computer and the Internet. Broadband (cable or DSL is preferred).
  • Students need to be at or above grade level for Writing and Literature Classes.
  • Students need good study skills. There will be weekly reading and writing assignments.
  • Students need excellent attendance! Any student who will not be present for all 8 weeks will need to wait for the next session.
