Upcoming Wild Animal Park Biology Labs with Mrs. Johansen

September 30, 2008

Here are some upcoming Wild Animal Park biology labs with Mrs. Johansen

Wild Animal Park Cres Conservation Education Laboratory

November 10, 2008-Helping solve the Bushmeat Crisis
Endangered Species in underdeveloped countries are being poached and used as food. People in these countries need a free source of protein, but endangered species need to be protected. We will be taking samples of random meats taken from meat markets and determining their genetic code. We will then run the code through the system to see what animal the meat came from, and from what region of the world the animal came from. This information will help scientists in the area know which animals need the most protection. We will meet at the Beckman Center at the Wild Animal Park at 8:45. We start our lab at 9:00 and end at 6:00. Families are welcome to attend on a limited basis, and need to pre-register.

February 9, 2009-Global Species Decline Research
Amphibians have declined from 6,000 known species down to 4,000 species over the last several years. One of the many culprits that are threatening amphibians is the Chytrid Fungus. The fungus causes the skin of frogs to thicken over time and thus slowly suffocates the frog over a period of months. We will be taking samples from frogs thought to be infected with the virus, and then DNA map those samples. If the frogs are infected, they can be given an anti-fungal bath to get rid of the fungus. We will meet at the Beckman Center at the Wild Animal Park at 8:45 a.m. We start our lab at 9:00 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. Families are welcome to attend on a limited basis, and need to pre-register.

March 23, 2009-Determining genders of the endangered California Condors
California Condors have no external genitalia and the males and females generally look the same on the outside. So, we will be taking blood extractions from the Condors and map their DNA through Polymerase Chain Reaction. Our results will tell us the genders of the birds.  Meeting at the Beckman Center at the Wild Animal Park at 8:45 a.m. We begin our lab at 9:00 a.m. and end the day at 6:00 p.m. While our gel electrophoresis is going, we will walk around the Wild Animal Park. Families are welcome to attend on a limited basis, and need to pre-register.

All of the flyers, permission slips, etc. are located in my JCS Online courses under “Lessons.” If you have any questions, please contact me in your JCS Online biology course.

Sincerely-

Mrs. Johansen

JCS Online Tip: How to Confirm A Dropbox Assignment Was Actually Submitted

September 29, 2008

After you have submitted an assignment to a dropbox, you may want to go back and confirm your assignment was submitted. The fastest way to do this is to go to the dropbox that you were sending a file from. At the bottom, you will see your submission date and time along with the attachment you sent in.
Once your specialist grades the submission, you’ll also be able to see the points and comments on the same screen.

South Orange County Learning Center Update for September 2008

September 29, 2008

Hello Orange County JCS Families,
We have had a wonderful start in our More Nutshell Science class this semester.

We are currently taking “A Peek Inside You” learning about the Respiratory System, its parts and function. We have learned that air is mostly made of Nitrogen but also has a fair amount of Oxygen and only a tiny bit of Carbon Dioxide, which is a poison to our bodies. We measured how much air we exhale and saw that our lungs do in fact exhale CO2.   Next, we will begin the Digestive System learning about the organs and their function as well as the nutrients in certain foods. Finally, we will conclude this unit with the Circulatory System, listening to our hearts and seeing how the heart and lungs are intricately intertwined. This will conclude our Life Science for the semester. Then we’ll move on to Physical Science with crystals.

The art class has just finished studying Vincent Van Gogh paintings.  They learned about Van Gogh’s interest in everyday life.  His genre still life paintings of shoes revealed his use of hatching.  The class then did contour drawing of their own shoe.  After I copied the shoes on the copier they took warm and cool colors and did hatching on the drawings using both colored pencils and markers.  They then did a pattern of shoes alternating pencil and markers drawings.  They may not have mastered every aspect of these lessons, but they have become familiar with these elements of art.  There study ended with learning about primary and secondary colors, as well as color value using white and black.  Each student chose an aspect of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” to paint.

Our next project is learning from Leonardo Da Vinci about his life, his inventions and paintings.  I can’t wait to see how they bring the “Mona Lisa” from the two-dimensional canvas to a three-dimensional sculpture.
