Julian Charter Teacher Selected for Exclusive Discovery Education National Institute

Silver Spring, Md. (July 28, 2008) - On July 21-25, Nancy Porter from Julian Charter School and more than 70 educators from across the country participated in an exclusive professional development event for Discovery Educator Network members at the headquarters of Discovery Communications in Silver Spring, Md. The Discovery Educator Network National Institute was hosted by Discovery Education, a division of Discovery Communications, whose networks include Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and the Science Channel.
The Discovery Educator Network (DEN) is a global community of over 88,000 educators passionate about integrating media into classroom curriculum. The DEN National Institutes are exclusive professional development opportunities open only to STAR Discovery Educators. These educators are DEN members recognized for their outstanding efforts to share their insight and expertise with peers through activities such as trainings, workshops or presentations on how to integrate digital media into classroom instruction.
STAR Discovery Educators enjoy access to a variety of exclusive benefits, including in-person professional development, online activities, training resources, Discovery events, and regular support and communication with DEN staff members. Porter is one of only 3,000 STAR Discovery Educators nationwide.
During the Institute, national leaders in educational technology collaborated with participants on a variety of projects. By the end of the Institute, participants had created classroom ready multimedia projects and participated in a variety of workshops on the newest online technologies used by today’s technology-savvy generation, including streaming media, Web 2.0 websites, podcasts, blogs, and wikis.

NOTICE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS AND PUPILS:
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY FOR ASSISTANCE IN PREPARING FOR THE
CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM AFTER GRADE 12
Parents/Guardians and Pupils:
Pursuant to California Education Code section 37254, you are hereby notified that:
1. Pupils, including English learners, who have not passed one or both parts of the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) by the end of grade 12 are entitled to receive intensive instruction and services for up to two consecutive academic years after completion of grade 12 or until they pass both parts of the CAHSEE, whichever comes first;
2. English learners, who have not passed one or both parts of the CAHSEE by the end of grade 12, are entitled to receive services to improve English proficiency as needed to pass those parts of the CAHSEE not yet passed for up to two consecutive academic years after completion of grade 12 or until they pass both parts of the CAHSEE, whichever comes first; and
3. Pupils, who have not passed one or both parts of the CAHSEE by the end of grade 12, have the right to file a complaint regarding intensive instruction and services under the Uniform Complaint Procedures if he or she was not provided the opportunity to receive intensive instruction and services for up to two consecutive academic years after completion of grade 12 or until they pass both parts of the CAHSEE, whichever comes first.

Upcoming Plant Sale at the San Diego Learning Center

We are pleased to announce that JCS will be starting a gardening class at the Learning Center. To help us get things going we are asking everyone to please donate any potted plants, vegetables, fruits, etc. that you have for an upcoming fundraiser. We are also accepting any gardening related supplies or cash donations. The PLANT SALE (fundraiser) is scheduled for Friday, September 5 delayed until October. That means we need your donations as soon as possible.
